Adjustment Disorder (Depression Anxiety)

Description
Inability to adjust to the normal stress in life, resulting in significant emotional or behavioral symptoms and impairment of function in daily life. The disorder typically causes depression, anxiety or both. In severe cases patients may have suicidal thoughts. The symptoms begin within 3 months of a stressful life event.

Symptoms
Depression, anxiety, desperation, trouble sleeping, nervousness, and agitation.

Tests
A history and physical exam will be performed.
Treatment
Treatment options include psychotherapy, and/or medications. Medications used include antidepressants and anti-anxiety medications. The most common antidepressants are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs).
