Acute Fatty Liver Of Pregnancy

Description
A rare life-threatening complication of pregnancy that occurs in the third trimester or the immediate period after delivery. It is thought to be caused by a disordered metabolism in the mother. It can be fatal to either the baby or the mother.

Symptoms
Abdominal pain, vomiting, yellowing skin, confusion, headache.

Tests
A history and physical exam will be performed. Other tests include monitoring of the baby, and liver function tests.
Standard Workup
- CBC
- Chem 12
- UA
- Ultrasound
Treatment
Delivery of the baby reverses the liver damage.
